MUSIC OR SONG?

In our world today music is one area of life that cannot be overlooked, be it secular or sacred. Music never started now, it’s as old as man. What then is music in a simple term? It is simply an organized sound, beat or rhythm. However, some organized sounds may be unorganized to some persons and vice versa but then it does not change the fact that it is a music to the other. Music or song are related because they have to do with sound and so whatever music or song you constantly hear have a way of affecting your life either positively or negatively. Recall Saul in the bible that it was music that was the cure to his often problems and at many times King David will always say “Sing unto the Lord…” meaning there is something about music or song. Just as “faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God” so also does music produce results.

There are two broad categories of music – secular and sacred. However, music is supposed to give inspiration, send a strong message, change a live(s), uplift the spirit, among others. In today’s world especially in this part of the country we dwell you see a little child sing all the secular songs in an album but yet does not recall what he/she was taught in school again. Most actions of people are triggered by the kind of music they constantly hear and that raise the big question – What is your music life? Are you aware that the kingdom of God and that of the devil both have a music life? That is why when we get to heaven our duties will be music/song/singing. The fact that the music has the word “God” or any word pretending to God does not make it a godly one, do well to test and see using the scripture as a base. For instance, the popular music “Kukere” is not a sacred one but then on the supposed sacred wing you have “Kukere for Christ” which have some godly lyrics but same secular beats. This is to capture both the secular market with the beat and the sacred market with the lyrics. This in totality is not sacred and it’s on this note that gospel artistes are urged to pray and get inspiration from God and not to edit the secular music for the purpose of moving the market to their favour and confusing young Christians. Gone are those days when we had musicians that will sing and pass strong message to the society even when they were not sacred but then were impactful like the late Fela, today we rarely have such as even the gospel artistes will move away from the sacred to the secular world just to sell their music. Remember “What shall it profit you to sell your secular music and loss your soul at the end, what will be your crown?”  We have to constantly watch what we listen to and what our children listen to, for they must be godly and if this is done then we are sure that we have affected them positively. God help us in Jesus Name, Amen.
